Authorities in New Jersey have indicted seven individuals linked to two separate human trafficking operations in North and South Jersey. The announcement was made by Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, the Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ), and the New Jersey State Police (NJSP).
In Essex County, a female suspect allegedly used violence to control teenage victims, subjecting them to sexual assaults for profit. Meanwhile, in Cumberland County, women were reportedly brought weekly to a house of prostitution in Bridgeton.
Attorney General Platkin emphasized the importance of addressing human trafficking: “There is no tolerance for the exploitation of anyone, especially in this dehumanizing way,” he stated. He urged the public to report suspicions via a confidential hotline.
J. Stephen Ferketic, Director of the Division of Criminal Justice, affirmed their commitment: “We are committed to relentlessly pursuing justice for those who have been affected by these crimes.” Colonel Patrick J. Callahan of NJSP echoed this sentiment, highlighting their mission to protect vulnerable individuals.
The Bridgeton case led to indictments against Usiel Luna and co-conspirators Jose Perez-Lopez, Rosendo Vazquez-Hernandez, and Yerson Puentes-Marquez. They allegedly operated a brothel where women were forced into commercial sex under false pretenses.
In Essex County, Khailah Meekins and Donte Barkley face charges related to trafficking three minors. Richard Johnson was previously indicted on related charges including aggravated sexual assault.
The DCJ’s Human Trafficking Unit has been instrumental since its formation in January 2023 under Attorney General Platkin's leadership. The unit focuses on dismantling criminal networks through education and collaboration with law enforcement agencies.
The investigations were conducted by NJSP’s Human Trafficking Unit with assistance from various legal entities. Deputy Attorneys General Lisa Queen, Amie Hyde, and Jaclyn Dowd are leading the prosecution efforts under Bureau Chief Laura Magnone and DCJ Deputy Director Jillian Carpenter.
All defendants remain innocent until proven guilty in court.
