The Attorney General's Office has disclosed the identities of the individual and police officers involved in a fatal incident on September 16, 2024, in Bayonne, New Jersey. The deceased civilian has been identified as Juan Poche, aged 44, from Bayonne.

According to initial findings, police officers from the Bayonne Police Department were dispatched at 12:18 a.m. following a 911 call about loud screaming from an apartment on Broadway near Linnet Street. Upon arrival, officers heard yelling from inside the specified apartment. They encountered Mr. Poche and called for medical assistance.

To ensure safety and facilitate transportation to Bayonne Medical Center, Sgt. Matthew Tarbett along with Officers Christian Cella, Marcin Chojnowski, and Ernesto Naveed restrained Mr. Poche. He was pronounced dead at 8:44 a.m., with the cause and manner of death still under investigation.

A state law enacted in 2019 mandates that the Attorney General’s Office investigate any deaths occurring during encounters with law enforcement or while in custody. Such investigations must be presented to a grand jury to decide if charges against involved officers are warranted.

The investigation continues, with no additional information available at this time.
