Governor Phil Murphy has signed a new bill into law that allows unions to file wage claim suits on behalf of workers in certain projects. The legislation, S-1438/A-5794, enables unions to represent workers in wage claim suits against contractors and subcontractors for work performed on construction projects. Governor Murphy emphasized the importance of fair compensation for all workers, stating, "Every worker should be properly compensated for the work they undertake – no exceptions."
Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo praised the bill, highlighting how it provides a vital avenue for construction workers to pursue unpaid wages. Senator Troy Singleton, one of the prime sponsors of the bill, emphasized the significance of the new law in helping workers receive adequate representation during times of hardship.
Assemblywoman Annette Quijano noted that the bill signifies a significant shift in protecting worker's rights and extending the reach of unions. Assemblyman Anthony Verrelli echoed this sentiment, stating that the legislation strengthens labor rights in New Jersey and empowers the workforce.
Anthony Abrantes, Assistant Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, expressed pride in the bill, emphasizing the importance of granting unions the authority to champion wage claims for all workers. Mike Hellstrom, LIUNA Vice President and Eastern Regional Manager, commended Governor Murphy and the bill's sponsors for addressing wage theft and recognizing the crucial role of unions in protecting workers.
The new law will take effect immediately and is expected to have a positive impact on workers in New Jersey, ensuring that they receive the pay they have rightfully earned.
