Governor Phil Murphy has demanded information from bus companies involved in transporting migrants from Texas and Louisiana to transit sites in New Jersey. The Governor's actions come in response to the arrival of over 1,800 individuals in New Jersey since December 31, 2023, with most continuing to their intended destinations in New York City.
"As we continue to see more migrants arrive to our state at the hands of the Governor of Texas, who is reportedly funding the passengers’ transportation with taxpayer funds, notice to New Jersey officials in advance of these individuals’ anticipated arrival is critical to ensuring the health and safety of passengers once they arrive in New Jersey," Governor Murphy stated.
The Governor emphasized the importance of sharing information with New York City officials to ensure the well-being of the passengers there. To facilitate this process, Governor Murphy has requested that bus companies provide the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management with at least 32 hours notice before the anticipated arrival of each bus, along with specific details regarding the passengers, drop-off locations, and bus descriptions.
In a letter to the bus companies, Governor Murphy outlined the information required, including the total number of passengers, the breakdown of passengers by age and group type, drop-off locations in New Jersey, the bus's departure details, and a description of the bus itself.
The Governor's proactive approach aims to enhance coordination and preparedness to assist migrants arriving in New Jersey and ensure a smooth transition for those continuing their journey to New York City.
