Governor Phil Murphy has announced the allocation of $10 million in FEMA “Swift Current” resilience funding to assist homeowners impacted by December flooding in New Jersey, particularly in the Passaic River Basin. The funding will be dedicated to elevating and/or buying out flood-insured properties in the areas most heavily affected by the recent floods.
Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, State Director of Emergency Management and Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, expressed his support for the initiative, stating, “This is excellent news for those residents who live in the Passaic River Basin that were impacted by the recent flooding in the December storms.”
The Department of Community Affairs Acting Commissioner Jacquelyn A. Suárez acknowledged the challenges faced by families in affected communities, saying, “DCA acknowledges the profound hardships that families in affected communities have endured due to last month’s flooding.”
Commissioner of Environmental Protection Shawn M. LaTourette highlighted the significance of the investments in flood protection, emphasizing Governor Murphy's dedication to enhancing the resilience of New Jersey communities.
The allocated funding aims to provide assistance to homeowners in mitigating future flooding events and protecting their properties. Through partnerships with the State Hazard Mitigation Team and local governments, eligible flood-prone homes will be identified for elevation or buyout projects.
Governor Murphy's administration has been proactive in addressing the impacts of extreme weather and climate change, with initiatives such as the Blue Acres buyout program. The Department of Environmental Protection will work towards helping affected homeowners who wish to relocate and create green spaces for enhanced flood protection.
The State Hazard Mitigation Team, established as part of Executive Order No. 344, will play a crucial role in coordinating and efficiently utilizing hazard mitigation funding to safeguard homes and critical infrastructure in response to disaster events. The Department of Community Affairs and the Department of Environmental Protection will collaborate with local communities to manage home elevation and buyout projects using the allocated funding.
