New Jersey's Minimum Wage Surpasses $15/Hour: Joint Statement by State Leaders
Jan 1 2024
In a joint statement, Governor Murphy, Lieutenant Governor Way, Senate President Scutari, and Speaker Coughlin expressed their pride as New Jersey's statewide minimum wage has crossed the $15 per hour mark. They highlighted the significant progress made since they commenced their collaborative efforts in January 2018, noting that at the outset, the state's minimum wage stood at a mere $8.60 per hour.
The leaders credited a bill enacted in February 2019 for propelling New Jersey into the select group of states boasting a minimum wage exceeding $15 an hour. Additionally, they underscored the importance of indexing the wage to inflation, ensuring that the earnings of working families keep pace with rising prices.
"Making life more affordable for New Jersey families is our highest priority," the statement emphasized. The announcement also heralded the positive impact of this wage increase on over 350,000 hourly workers, characterizing it as a hard-won victory for working families throughout the state.
