The Mercer County Park Commission will be bringing you facts about our horses at The Mercer County Stables each Sunday! Let's welcome Stables Sunday! This week we have two fun facts about our horses! (We can't wait to meet some of these horses in a few weeks and share them with you!)
A horses’ height is universally measured in “hands”. A hand equals 4”. A horse is measured by starting at the horse’s foot on the ground, and placing one hand up over the other again and again all the way to the withers. The withers are a solid, easily identified body part that doesn’t move. An extra finger adds and extra inch to the number of hands needed to measure a horse.
Did you know a horse’s digestive system is approximately 100’ long and food takes roughly 48 hours to pass through their entire system?
