Legislation sponsored by Senator Robert Singer (R-Monmouth, Ocean) to address the backlog of professional license applications at the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) advanced in the Senate Commerce Committee on February 12, 2026.
Senator Singer commented on the ongoing issues at the DCA: “Ongoing service failures at the DCA have directly contributed to the immense backlog of licensing applications and renewals that are delaying professionals from entering or advancing in their careers. By investing in additional staff, the DCA will be better equipped to meet the needs of our regulated professions while providing the necessary support our workforce deserves, ultimately leading to easier access to services and lower costs for all New Jerseyans.”
The proposed bill, S-818, would provide funding for the DCA to hire more staff members with the goal of reducing delays in processing professional license applications. The legislation calls for appropriations during fiscal years 2027, 2028, and 2029. It also requires annual reports from the DCA detailing how funds are used and evaluating improvements in application processing.
