Bipartisan legislation to provide tax relief for volunteer first responders has advanced in the New Jersey Senate. The bill, S-2759, sponsored by Senator Carmen F. Amato, Jr. (R-Ocean), was approved by the Senate Labor Committee.
The proposed law would exempt stipends received by volunteer emergency medical services personnel and firefighters from state income tax, temporary disability insurance tax, and family leave insurance tax.
“I want to thank co-prime sponsor Senator Gordon Johnson for working together in a bipartisan manner to support our first responders,” said Senator Amato. “The men and women who volunteer as EMS and firefighters give their time and often risk their safety to protect our communities. This bill ensures that individuals who step up to serve their community aren’t penalized by unnecessary taxes on the stipends they receive.”
The measure is part of ongoing efforts to encourage more residents to volunteer as first responders across New Jersey.
An identical version of this bill had previously passed the New Jersey Senate in December but required reintroduction at the start of the new legislative session.
Senator Anthony M. Bucco serves as Senate Republican Leader and chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee while also serving on the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, according to his official website. He represents the 25th Legislative District in the New Jersey Legislature and is involved in sponsoring bills and participating in committee discussions on key issues.
