The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a bipartisan bill, sponsored by Senator Jon Bramnick (R-21), that aims to make the use of signal jammers a criminal offense.
Senator Bramnick stated, “Signal jammers interrupt vital communications and present a serious safety concern for communities. Criminalizing the use of signal jammers would ensure that residents, first responders, and businesses can securely transmit communications without interference.”
The proposed legislation, S-3529, would classify as a fourth-degree crime any act that interferes with or causes interference to radio communications from stations licensed or authorized under federal law or operated by the United States government. The bill also addresses violations involving scanning receivers capable of intercepting transmissions in frequencies used by domestic cellular radio telecommunications services. This includes devices that can be easily modified to access such frequencies or those equipped with decoders to convert digital cellular transmissions into analog voice audio.
