The New Jersey Senate has approved bipartisan legislation aimed at supporting senior citizens during natural disasters and emergencies. The bill, sponsored by Senator Carmen F. Amato, Jr. (R-9) and Senator Linda Greenstein (D-14), would give counties the authority to provide additional help to seniors in times of crisis.
“New Jersey is no stranger to natural disasters, but during these emergencies, seniors often face challenges that can limit their access to potentially life-saving resources and services,” said Sen. Amato. “I’m grateful to Senator Greenstein for working with me to encourage seniors to register for additional assistance during emergencies, so counties can be better prepared to provide resources and care to the most vulnerable in our communities.”
The measure, known as S-3317, allows counties in New Jersey to set up a voluntary registry for residents aged 65 and older who may need extra support during emergencies. Counties that decide to create this registry would also be responsible for running public awareness campaigns about its benefits.
The legislation further enables participating counties to prepare and distribute emergency supply kits specifically for registered seniors.
