Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, who has represented New Jersey’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress since 2015, posted a series of statements on May 7, 2026, addressing mental health equity and concerns about political power and industry ties.
In her first post, Rep. Watson Coleman highlighted proposed legislation aimed at tackling disparities in mental health care. She wrote, “The Pursuing Equity in Mental Health Act addresses this crisis by funding research, elevating culturally competent providers, building outreach programs that reduce stigma, and developing a training program for providers to effectively manage disparities.” (May 7, 2026)
In a follow-up message on the same day, she stated, “The inequity facing racial and ethnic minorities is not a partisan crisis. Funding research and efforts to find new treatments benefits all of our communities, not shying away from science. Affordable & accessible mental health care for all Americans is a right, not a privilege.” (May 7, 2026)
Later that evening, Rep. Watson Coleman shifted focus to potential conflicts of interest between political leaders and private industry: “The people closest to political power are increasingly tied to industries benefiting from government policy and spending. The public deserves to have confidence that defense is being driven by national security needs and public interest – not to line the Trump family pockets.” (May 7, 2026)
Watson Coleman was born in Camden, New Jersey in 1945 and currently resides in Ewing Township at age 78. She graduated from Thomas Edison State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1985. Before joining Congress in 2015 as the successor to Rush Holt Jr., she served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2006 to 2010.
