Senator Joe Pennacchio, representing Morris and Passaic counties, has introduced a bill aimed at increasing the security and transparency of New Jersey’s vote-by-mail process. The legislation seeks to add more checks and balances for accessing ballot information.
“This legislation will strengthen transparency and accountability in our vote-by-mail process,” said Sen. Pennacchio. “Public confidence in our elections depends on consistency, security, and clear rules that are applied uniformly across every county. However, too often we have seen last minute mail in ballots literally change the outcome of an election. Once separated there is no way to challenge the validity of the ballot. This legislation would give a judge direct authority in determining whether those last minute ballots are valid. By requiring bipartisan oversight and establishing enforceable standards for how mail-in ballots are stored and safeguarded, we are reinforcing the integrity of the process and ensuring voters can trust that every valid ballot is handled properly and protected under the law.”
