Senate Republican Budget Officer Declan O’Scanlon raised concerns on Apr. 2 about a proposed $500 million, 30-year lease by Newark Public Schools, sending a letter to Acting State Comptroller Shirley Emehelu, Commissioner of the Department of Education Lily Laux, and Chairperson of the Department of Community Affairs Michael Rogers.
The project would provide classroom space for fewer than 700 students and could result in annual facility costs approaching $25,000 per student. O’Scanlon called for a thorough review to ensure responsible use of state taxpayer funds.
In his letter, O’Scanlon said: “Recent news reports have raised serious concerns about the proposed lease. These reports indicate that the lease may carry a per-student cost substantially higher than that of comparable school facilities projects across the State. If the shocking reported numbers are real ($500 million over 30 years to serve under 700 students) that’s almost $25,000 a year per student just for the facility. Many school districts spend less than this in total to provide a year’s worth of education. If these numbers are accurate, the deal must be rejected.”
While O’Scanlon has voiced his concerns regarding fiscal oversight in this case, other legislative leaders also play significant roles in New Jersey’s government structure. Senator Anthony M. Bucco provides constituent services through his district office and email for legislative inquiries according to the official website.
Bucco serves as Senate Republican Leader and chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee while serving on both Judiciary and Budget and Appropriations Committees according to official information. He is also active in sponsoring bills and contributing to committee discussions on key state issues as reported by his office.
As scrutiny continues around large-scale public spending proposals such as Newark’s school lease plan, legislators like O’Scanlon emphasize accountability while colleagues such as Bucco contribute leadership within committee structures according to legislative records.
