The New Jersey Senate has passed a bipartisan bill aimed at enhancing efforts to address online child exploitation and human trafficking. The legislation, sponsored by Senator Carmen F. Amato, Jr. (R-9) and Senator Linda Greenstein (D-14), is intended to provide law enforcement with more resources as the state prepares for an influx of visitors during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“As New Jersey prepares to host a major international event, we also have a responsibility to prepare for the very real risks that come with it,” said Sen. Amato. “Senator Greenstein and I have worked closely to ensure this investment bolsters law enforcement’s efforts to protect children from exploitation and human trafficking.”
The Internet Crimes Against Children Unit (ICAC) within the New Jersey Division of State Police experienced a notable rise in cases of child exploitation during the COVID-19 pandemic due to increased online activity. With large crowds expected for the upcoming World Cup, officials are preparing for further increases in online criminal activity.
The bill, S-4879, will allocate $3 million to support the ICAC Unit’s work ahead of the international sporting event. The funds will be used for advanced training for personnel, acquisition of specialized equipment and vehicles, software upgrades, and mental health support services for officers tasked with protecting vulnerable individuals.
