The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) has initiated legal proceedings in the state’s Superior Court in Mercer County. The lawsuit seeks to confirm that former U.S. Senator Robert Menendez is permanently barred from pursuing or holding any public office within New Jersey’s state or municipal government. This action comes as a preventive measure against potential contempt of court by Menendez, should he attempt to seek public office.

The lawsuit highlights previous instances where individuals subject to similar disqualifications have sought election. Notably, former Paterson Mayor Joey Torres ran for mayor in 2022 despite a court order prohibiting him from running for or holding public office.

Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin provided a statement on the matter: “Bob Menendez abused his high-ranking position in the U.S. Senate for his own personal and financial benefit, betraying the people who elected him and the oath he swore to serve their interests and not his own. Today, my office sought a court order ensuring he will be given no such opportunity again in New Jersey. My office is committed to ensuring that the rule of law endures, that it is applied equally and fairly regardless of political concerns and affiliations, and that corruption has consequences.”

This legal move underscores the commitment of Platkin’s office to uphold legal standards and address corruption without bias.
