Senator Jim Holzapfel (R-10) has issued a statement following the news that an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, who was allegedly driving under the influence, was involved in a fatal crash that killed a woman and her 11-year-old daughter.

“Governor Murphy’s reckless sanctuary state policies allowed a known repeat offender to walk free and now, an innocent family is left to pick up the pieces,” said Sen. Holzapfel. “This is the devastating cost of putting political ideology ahead of public safety.”

The incident has renewed criticism from some lawmakers regarding New Jersey’s status as a sanctuary state, which restricts cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Supporters of these policies argue they help foster trust between immigrant communities and police, while opponents like Senator Holzapfel claim they can put public safety at risk.
