Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and the Division of Criminal Justice have announced an indictment against Jeffrey O. Kennerk, a Fort Lauderdale resident. Kennerk, 34, is accused of multiple weapons offenses after bringing firearms, including a booby-trapped semi-automatic rifle, onto an Amtrak train.
Kennerk faces charges for possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, four counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, and three counts of unlawful possession of an assault firearm. He is also charged with aggravated assault and additional offenses related to large-capacity magazines, silencers, and causing or risking widespread injury, among others.
“This defendant allegedly hauled a small arsenal of deadly weapons and ammunition through busy transit stations, and on a train filled with passengers,” stated Attorney General Platkin. He further emphasized the dangerous nature of leaving a suitcase containing weapons at Newark Penn Station.
DCJ Director Theresa L. Hilton emphasized the collaborative effort of law enforcement agencies in this case, stating, “The firearms seized in this case were illegal and presented a grave threat to public safety.”
NJ TRANSIT Police played a significant role in the apprehension of Kennerk. Police Chief Christopher Trucillo praised the officers involved, highlighting the importance of ongoing investigations that led to Kennerk’s indictment.
Colonel Patrick J. Callahan of the New Jersey State Police pointed out the crucial intervention in preventing a potentially catastrophic event. He discussed the discovery of illegal firearms, including large-capacity magazines, silencers, and a booby-trapped rifle that discharged during the arrest.
Special Agent in Charge L.C. Cheeks Jr. of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives remarked on the commitment to identifying and disrupting criminal activities related to gun trafficking and illegal weapons possession.
The incident began on January 3, 2025, when NJ Transit Police found an unattended suitcase at Newark Penn Station containing various weapons and ammunition. Surveillance identified Kennerk as the owner, who was later found on an Amtrak train headed for Trenton. Officers arrested Kennerk before he could board another train, finding additional weapons in his possession.
The allegations are serious, carrying potential sentences of up to 10 years for second-degree charges and up to 18 months for fourth-degree charges. Deputy Attorney General Karen Bracizewski is leading the prosecution, with support from other DCJ officials.
The authorities stress that charges are accusations, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Gratitude was expressed toward various law enforcement agencies for their collaboration in the investigation.
