The TCNJ women’s basketball team achieved a decisive 95-48 victory over Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, tying its program record with 17 made three-pointers during the game.
Maddie Bernhardt led the Lions off the bench, scoring a career-high 33 points. Notably, she scored 30 of those points in the second half, outscoring the entire Rutgers-Newark team by herself in that period (30-16). Bernhardt shot 7-for-11 from three-point range. Amanda Baylock contributed six three-pointers and finished with 23 points. Katie Fricker also reached double figures with 13 points.
Fricker and Baylock helped TCNJ (13-9, 12-3 NJAC) start strong, combining for four early three-pointers to put their team ahead. Rutgers-Newark (2-20, 0-15 NJAC) responded with an eight-point run to briefly take the lead before Baylock reclaimed it for TCNJ at the end of the first quarter.
The Scarlet Raiders remained competitive through part of the second quarter until TCNJ pulled ahead again with consecutive three-pointers from Izzy Augustine and Baylock. The Lions led by seven at halftime.
Baylock opened the second half with her fifth three-pointer before Bernhardt dominated, scoring 16 points as part of a large run late in the third quarter and adding another 14 in the fourth. This performance helped secure TCNJ’s largest win of the season.
According to post-game statistics, TCNJ shot nearly 53 percent from the field and almost 46 percent from beyond the arc. The team converted turnovers into 33 points and held a significant advantage in bench scoring, largely due to Bernhardt’s efforts.
Bernhardt became just the 14th player in TCNJ program history to score at least 30 points in a single game. “Bernhardt joins Baylock in the 33-point club this season, setting a career-high in both points and triples (7). The sophomore did so in just 21 minutes.” Fricker contributed seven rebounds and four assists alongside her scoring total, while Brooke McFadden recorded a game-high twelve rebounds.
For Rutgers-Newark, Sanaa Brodie led her team with eighteen points and nine rebounds.
TCNJ has now won thirteen consecutive games against Rutgers-Newark. The Lions will next play Rowan at home on Wednesday, February 11 at 5 p.m.
