The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) is conducting an investigation into a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred on July 6, 2025, in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. The incident involved the death of a driver on a motorized scooter, whose identity has not been disclosed.
Preliminary findings indicate that around 12:05 a.m., three individuals were riding motorized scooters near State Street and High Street in Perth Amboy. A lieutenant from the Perth Amboy Police Department attempted to stop the group by activating his overhead lights and siren. While two riders left the scene, the third initially slowed down but then accelerated away at high speed heading northbound.
The lieutenant pursued the scooter until they crossed into Woodbridge Township. At this point, he turned off his lights and sirens and returned to Perth Amboy. Shortly after, Woodbridge police officers responded to a 911 call reporting a crash about a quarter mile north on State Street between Arbor Street and Ferry Street. Officers found the third rider deceased at the scene with his vehicle some distance away.
The investigation remains ongoing with no further details available at this time.
Under N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), enacted in 2019, it is mandated that any death occurring during an encounter with law enforcement or while in custody must be investigated by the Attorney General’s Office. These investigations are required to be presented to a grand jury to decide if there is sufficient evidence for an indictment against any involved officers.
