The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) has released three 911 calls and body-worn camera footage related to a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred on October 19, 2024, in Pemberton Township. The individual who died was identified as Marvin Taylor, age 57, from Browns Mills.
The OPIA is currently investigating the incident. The release of the recordings follows policies set by the Attorney General’s Office in 2019 to ensure fair and transparent investigations into fatal police encounters. Representatives of Mr. Taylor’s family were allowed to review the materials before they were made public.
According to the investigation, authorities received a 911 call at 3:22 p.m. reporting smoke at a residence on Woodland Avenue in Browns Mills. Both the Pemberton Township Volunteer Fire Department and local police responded to the scene.
Officers learned that a person with a firearm—later identified as Mr. Taylor—was in the backyard of the home. Police positioned themselves behind the property and issued verbal commands for Mr. Taylor to drop his weapon. Mr. Taylor exchanged gunfire with Officer Kyle McQueen of the Pemberton Township Police Department and was struck during this exchange.
After being shot, officers provided first aid to Mr. Taylor, who was then airlifted to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was pronounced dead at 5:36 p.m. A firearm was found near him after he was shot. No officers or other civilians were injured during the event.
Under New Jersey law N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), deaths occurring during encounters with law enforcement must be investigated by the Attorney General’s Office and presented to a grand jury for possible indictment decisions regarding involved officers.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no further details are being released at this time.
