Last week, Senator Carmen Amato, Jr., Assemblyman Brian Rumpf, and Assemblyman Greg Myhre from New Jersey’s 9th Legislative District addressed concerns to Department of Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo regarding a proposed rule that would alter the classification of independent contractors in the state.
In their letter, the legislators highlighted feedback from local residents about the potential effects of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development’s proposal. The excerpt stated:
“As of this writing, our district office has received more than 50 letters from constituents who are deeply concerned about a proposed rule from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development that would drastically change how the state classifies independent contractors.
These constituents strongly believe that proposed new rules (N.J.A.C. 12:11) stand to threaten the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people across the state by implementing an “ABC” test for independent workers, freelancers, and contractors.”
The lawmakers urged Commissioner Asaro-Angelo to reconsider moving forward with these changes due to widespread concern among those who rely on freelance or contract work for their income.
