Senator Carmen Amato Jr. and Senator Anthony M. Bucco called on May 15 for the passage of S-1559, a bill they say would provide permanent relief to New Jersey drivers facing high fuel costs.
The senators said the legislation is intended to help families who are struggling with rising expenses, including gasoline prices that have surged above $4.50 per gallon. They argue that S-1559 would offer meaningful financial relief by reducing costs at the pump.
“New Jersey families are being squeezed from every direction by rising costs, and the price of filling up your tank has become yet another expense many people can barely afford,” Amato said. “Garden State residents deserve meaningful relief that helps them keep more of their hard-earned money. That’s why we introduced legislation that would provide permanent relief at the pump and put real money back into the pockets of working families.”
Bucco also addressed concerns about affordability: “I hear from friends and neighbors all the time about how tired they are of being nickel and dimed while the cost-of-living crisis continues to spiral out of control,” he said. “Families are paying more for groceries, utilities, housing, and transportation, and they need meaningful relief from Trenton. Our proposal is a smart, responsible approach that helps taxpayers keep more of their hard-earned money while preserving the critical funding needed to maintain our roads, bridges, and transportation infrastructure. This legislation is about affordability, common sense, and recognizing that New Jerseyans deserve a government that puts their needs first.”
If enacted into law, S-1559 would create lasting changes aimed at helping drivers cope with ongoing increases in fuel prices as well as broader cost-of-living pressures.
Republican lawmakers have suggested over $1 billion in savings measures designed to make tax relief possible for state residents; however, they say Democratic leaders have chosen instead to focus on higher government spending rather than direct taxpayer support.
Bucco serves as Senate Republican Leader for District 25 in Morris County according to the official website. He also chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee and serves on several other committees within the legislature.
