Governor Phil Murphy expressed his deep sorrow at the news of the passing of former Essex County Executive Peter Shapiro. In a statement released, Governor Murphy said, "Tammy and I are incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of Peter Shapiro." He went on to highlight Shapiro's remarkable achievements, noting that "Peter was an esteemed public servant who, at just 23 years old, made history by becoming the youngest New Jerseyan ever elected to the General Assembly."

Throughout Shapiro's career, Governor Murphy emphasized his dedication to public service, especially during his tenure as the first-ever County Executive of Essex County. Governor Murphy stated, "Peter dedicated every ounce of himself to ensuring our state’s political institutions served the needs of our families." Reflecting on Shapiro's impact, Governor Murphy added, "His legacy of courage and compassion will inspire the people of New Jersey for generations to come."

Governor Murphy also extended his condolences to Shapiro's family, saying, "Our hearts and prayers are with Peter’s wife Bryna and their son Samuel." In closing, Governor Murphy expressed the profound loss felt by the community, declaring, "We will deeply miss the Wunderkind of Essex County."
