Princeton University's Board of Trustees has announced new enrollment goals aimed at increasing access to higher education for low- and middle-income students. The board's decision follows an in-depth review of the university's admissions policies and processes, with a focus on creating opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds.

President Christopher L. Eisgruber expressed gratitude towards the board for their commitment to diversity, stating, “Princeton’s excellence depends upon attracting and supporting talent from all sectors of society.”

The board set ambitious targets for financial aid eligibility, with the goal of having at least 70% of the undergraduate student body eligible for need-based financial aid and at least 22% Pell Grant eligible. The university aims to achieve these goals by actively recruiting students from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds.

In line with the commitment to socioeconomic diversity, Princeton has long provided generous financial aid programs, ensuring that a quarter of undergraduates pay nothing to attend. The university's financial aid extends to the middle and upper-middle classes, with over 95% of U.S. households eligible for assistance based on income.

The percentage of undergraduates receiving financial aid has steadily increased over the years, with the new goal being at least 70% of undergraduate students receiving aid. Additionally, the university aims to have at least 22% of its undergraduate student body eligible for federal Pell Grants, which are awarded to lower-income students.

The board also highlighted the importance of the university's transfer program in attracting a diverse group of talented students from various backgrounds. The program, which has seen significant growth in recent years, provides opportunities for community college students and veterans to thrive at Princeton.

Regarding legacy preferences in admissions, the committee acknowledged the limited impact of the preference on the overall student body composition. The trustees emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between honoring the university's ties with alumni and advancing socioeconomic diversity goals.

In terms of athletics, the trustee committee recognized the value of varsity athletic competition in the university's educational program. They noted that recruited athletes contribute meaningfully to campus life and achieve post-graduation outcomes comparable to their non-athlete peers.

Through these initiatives and commitments, Princeton University is dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment that provides equal opportunities for all students to excel academically and personally.
