Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin has taken a significant step in revolutionizing how New Jersey's law enforcement agencies handle mental health and addiction crises. Platkin issued an Administrative Directive to formally establish the Office of Alternative and Community Responses (OACR), emphasizing a shift towards innovative public safety strategies. The creation of this office aims to address the shortcomings of traditional law enforcement responses in dealing with complex issues like substance use disorder and mental health emergencies.

Governor Phil Murphy expressed his support for the OACR, highlighting its role in enhancing community-centered programming to better assist individuals in crisis. Meanwhile, Attorney General Platkin emphasized the importance of prioritizing collaborative and public health-centered approaches to make communities safer and healthier. Tiffany Wilson, the Director of the OACR, emphasized the office's role in fostering relationships between law enforcement, healthcare professionals, and communities to ensure public safety and health.

The establishment of the OACR consolidates various successful initiatives aimed at enhancing public health and safety responses in New Jersey. One such program, the ARRIVE Together initiative, has shown promising outcomes in addressing mental health crises without resorting to arrests or the use of force. The OACR will now oversee efforts to prevent and combat addiction, improve law enforcement responses to emergencies, and support law enforcement officers' mental well-being.

Director Tiffany Wilson will lead the OACR, which will oversee the creation of four new bureaus focusing on opioid prevention and response, resiliency for law enforcement officers, alternative emergency responses, and diversionary programs. The OACR's mission is to promote innovative approaches to public safety, prevent crime through community-led strategies, and support individuals in crisis effectively.

The establishment of the OACR signifies a significant milestone in New Jersey's commitment to advancing innovation in public safety. By prioritizing empathy, dignity, and recovery, the OACR aims to provide equitable treatment and support to communities grappling with addiction and mental health challenges.
